Chapter Five – Malory

Among the chaos, Malory broke her cover, rushing towards the fallen necromancer. Her skin crawled from all the poisoned souls that pressed in on her consciousness, begging and gibbering for bodies, to be released to the world of the living. Poisoned souls that spread their poison. “Girl!” Malory said, as the necromancer had been abandoned in the rush—though she struggled upwards to run. “Don’t go! I can help you! I’m the other necromancer. I’m the one who was stopping this.”

The woman hesitated. “Necromancer?”

“Yes!”

“Necromancer...” she hissed the word. “I’ve heard of you. You corrupt the dead!”

“What?” Malory tried to reach out, but the woman withdrew her hand and finally stumbled upright. “You’re one, too. You have the same powers, but you’re untrained. I can help.”

“I’m not. I’m not!” The woman tore off, and Malory streaked after her, confused and angry, desperate to make sure the woman didn’t get away.

“Please! I can help! It doesn’t have to—to be like this!” Her words came through rapid breaths as she tried to keep up, but the other woman, even in spite of her robes, seemed so much faster. “I know you don’t want this! You know it’s—it’s wrong!”

The woman didn’t respond and sped up.

“They’ll kill you! I can make that not happen! Please!” Malory yelled some more, but her target completely disappeared into the darkness. With the last vestiges of her magical power, Malory slipped into the trance state and grabbed a floating soul untainted by red.

Follow the woman, she commanded it. You will obey no other necromancer’s orders but my own. You will not listen to her will, for she has none over you. You will report back to me once you discover where she lives.

It was a little unorthodox, not summoning the spirit into something, but her command remained true. It let out an irritated, rusty sigh, but drifted after the necromancer. Malory snapped out of her trance.

This couldn’t have worked before. The spirits in the graveyard didn’t know where to look, but with someone fleeing the scene, and a ghost tight on their heels… she’d be able to find out. Though she needed to be cautious with her magic now. The lone spirit would be draining her, but since she hadn’t physically summoned it, the drain would occur at a lower rate.

Did any of those red souls escape? She rested her hands on her knees, panting, anxiety twisting itself deep in her heart. If any escaped, then they might be free to pass on their corruption. They weren’t revenants, though. Revenants felt different, even if there was something in the red, ominous corruption that emanated from them.

The local police came, gathering throughout the graveyard. They pointed guns at her before she identified herself, and was escorted back to where the others gathered. Seemed they’d managed to capture two cultists. Braxon had one pinned beneath his bear form, and Felicity, Kiya, and Jared took credit for the other.
